My Maths Buddy Dictionary

My Maths Buddy dictionary is a real buddy for your child throughout their school career.

The book contains Maths terminology starting from grade 3 all the way to grade 12 which is 10 years of school!

It is very convenient because if your child is in grade 7, for example, he or she would be able to refresh their memory on Maths topics from the previous grades without asking their teacher, or parents and without looking for other references such as Internet or other books.

In our experience working with children and after surveying many Maths teachers we know learners do not like asking teachers about something they do not understand, so with the My Maths Buddy at hand they always can refer to it.

My Maths Buddy dictionary is part of the Maths Understanding Made Simple kit and can be purchased separately.

It is Not Just a Glossary

My Maths Buddy is not just a glossary that gives brief descriptions of Maths terms. My Maths Buddy is so much more! The definitions in My Maths Buddy give FULL UNDERSTANDING to a child, so when they read them they are able to think with the term and understand it fully.

Here are the main components of the definitions that bring better understanding to a child:

Let’s look at this example:

  • The comprehensive definition itself
  • Real examples of application of the word in life which connects the child with his environment and make Maths real to them
  • Pictures and diagrams that significantly improve a child’s understanding
  • Simple English in the definitions allowing a child to comprehend better
  • The origin of the word which makes learning interesting and significantly contributes to data retention by a child

It is also very convenient for you as a parent to use it when you help your child with Maths. After reading the definition you will be able to:

  • understand it yourself fully and
  • help your child to understand it

Why real life examples?

Maths is such an abstract subject for the majority of learners and parents. A child very often has difficulties visualizing maths terms and their application in life and thus can’t understand them. To give you an example, try to learn and understand how to drive a car without ever seeing a car and seeing how it operates in life. It would be quite difficult, not so?

In this book we have real life examples for the terms so that a child can see how these terms apply or are applied. After all why do we study this subject at all if we do not apply it in real life?

Why origins?

Origins are a vital component in the understanding of a word. Let’s take, for example, the Maths term ‘acute angle’. If you look in a good etymology dictionary (etymology – where the words originally come from; the origin of it) you will see that the word ‘acute’ comes from the Latin word ‘acutus’ which means ‘sharp or pointed’ and the word ‘angle’ comes from the Latin word ‘angulus’ which means ‘corner’.

Doesn’t that give you a better idea of what the term ‘acute angle’ means?

If a child knows where the word comes from they better understand why it exists.
