Help with Maths
STRUGGLING WITH MATHS IS REAL
As parents, we all want our children to do well in school, get good marks, and succeed in the careers they one day choose. So when they struggle with Maths, it worries us deeply and with good reason.
Mathematics is one of the most important subjects in a child’s education. Did you know that not pursuing core Maths after grade 9 or failing core Maths in Grade 12 will close the door to 158 career paths for your child?
That’s how high the stakes are. From primary school, Maths begins to build essential life and career skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, logical and analytical reasoning, creativity, and financial literacy.
By the time children leave school, these skills influence not only their future career choices but also their ability to navigate life with confidence.

WE BELIEVE YOUR CHILD CAN!
Without a shadow of a doubt, be good at Maths
No matter the profession they choose, these abilities are crucial for their future success and wellbeing. This is why, as parents, we should do our best to support and encourage them in this subject.
The reality is not always smooth. At some point:
- Your child may start saying they are not coping with Maths or that they hate Maths,
- Their teachers may raise concerns and suggest extra lessons,
- Homework may turn into a daily struggle and their marks do not improve.
Even with tutoring, sometimes progress can be slow or non-existent. Eventually, many parents end up thinking:
“Maybe my child just isn’t good at Maths
But is that really true?
THE SHORTEST ANSWER IS: NO, IT IS NOT TRUE!
Here is why. The following is what society and you as a parent, provide for your child to learn Mathematics:
But there is one thing that your child does not have access to and this is:
A METHOD OF HOW TO LEARN SOMETHING EFFECTIVELY, WITH FULL UNDERSTANDING & WITH THE ABILITY TO APPLY IT.

You probably experienced this yourself, when you were studying something and realized later on that you do not remember what you studied. You felt completely blank! Or when you couldn’t grasp a concept when studying something no matter how hard you tried.
YOUR CHILD MAY BE EXPERIENCING THE SAME WHEN LEARNING MATHS.
They forget what they studied, they feel completely blank about what the teacher explained to them this morning and they feel confused about certain Maths topics.
It means that your child has gaps when learning Maths. Those gaps are identified by confusions, “memory loss” and feeling blank. This directly affects your child’s ability to succeed in learning.
The more gaps your child accumulates the more confused they are about Mathematics and at some point, they can’t take it anymore and start failing. They are convinced that they cannot do Maths.
Our studies show that a child starts developing gaps in Mathematics as early as in grade R with the gap being as big as 25% on average. Meaning a child misses 25% of Maths knowledge that is being taught to them in grade R.
Our studies also show that these gaps proportionally increase from grade R onwards. And as they continue to accumulate confusion sets in and it makes it more and more difficult for them to pass this subject especially when it comes to high school.
Yet, if one knows how to learn something without these gaps being created, one will succeed in learning and passing Maths.

THERE IS A SEQUENCE IN LEARNING MATHEMATICS THE RIGHT WAY
There is a specific way to learn Maths where one will be able to learn it with full understanding and ability to apply.
There are 4 specific levels that are set in an exact sequence that if followed will bring success in learning Maths.
And the very first step of this sequence is majorly being omitted by many.

LEVEL 1: Foundation
Mathematics Knowledge.
Let’s compare this level to crawling. Before a child starts walking they need to learn to crawl.
Mathematics is a language. It has its own vocabulary like any other subject. We call it terminology.
This is the very first step a child should take to lay a foundation in learning Mathematics with understanding.
This step is very often skipped or not thoroughly done and sets the path for failure.

LEVEL 2: Foundation
Mathematics Application.
Level 2 is equivalent to taking their first step.
Mathematics is an exact science with rules and formulas. One needs to learn how to apply them and practice them.
But if one skipped level 1 it is virtually impossible to be good at level 2.
As an example, a learner will not be able to come up with the right answer in 10 – 5 = if they do not really know what “subtract” or “minus” is.

LEVEL 3 + 4: Practical
Problem Solving + Abstract Mathematics
Mathematics problem solving is the process of applying mathematical tools to find a solution.
Together with abstract Mathematics it is a key aspect of mathematical education that helps develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills. It is applied to real life and abstract situations. Ability on both sets the correct path for your child’s success.
Levels 3 and 4 are heavily dependent on a solid foundation of level 1 and 2. And level 2 is heavily dependent on a strong foundation of level 1.

MATHS KNOWLEDGE IS THE MISSING LINK
Knowledge and full understanding of Mathematics terminology is what makes the learning of Maths not only easier but also meaningful.
A child will never succeed in higher levels such as, for example, the ability to do problem solving (level 3) if the child doesn’t understand Maths terminology related to this problem.
Mathematics knowledge (Level 1) is the most fundamental step in learning Maths and not addressing it creates a situation of too many gaps that lead to failure in Maths.
Starting from grade 1 a winning approach in learning Maths is to first understand the Maths terminology related to the Maths topic and then practice it.
Later on, in the higher grades, when the teacher introduces problem solving and in high school abstract Maths, your child will not be confused as they have the foundation of Maths fully grasped.

To make sure this step is never skipped, your child needs a very good Mathematics dictionary that contains full definitions of Maths terminology. Dictionaries are not a new concept. They have been around for centuries.
A Maths dictionary is something relatively new but have been around for more than a decade and are not such a novelty anymore either. But a very good Maths dictionary is something still quite rare.
The My Maths Buddy dictionary is THE dictionary you are looking for. It is designed to include Maths terminology that is introduced in schools starting from grade 1. It is perfectly aligned with the South African Maths curriculum and supports Level 1 in full.
Every time a new Maths topic gets introduced at school your child will be able to learn the terminology related to it. Any topics that your child was previously confused about he/she will be able to learn and fully grasp with the My Maths Buddy dictionary.

MY MATHS BUDDY DICTIONARY IS NOT JUST YOUR NORMAL DICTIONARY. IT IS MUCH MORE.
The My Maths Buddy dictionary is the most comprehensive Maths dictionary on the market. It is not your normal dictionary.
It is filled with pictures and diagrams, real life examples and more. It is designed with only one purpose in mind – to make Mathematical knowledge fully accessible and comprehensible by your child leaving no gaps.
The My Maths Buddy dictionary contains Maths terminology from the beginning of school and all the way through to grade 12. It means your child can address gaps from prior grades in a workable manner.
Real life examples in the definitions will help your child link Maths to life and make this subject more real to them and thus easier to understand.

”Oh My Goodness!!! I finally got the dictionary and put it to the test straight away!! I was helping Chloe with maths homework and she asked me what “tessellate” meant. I had never heard of that word so quickly looked it up and to my surprise… ha-ha-hah the word was in your dictionary!!
We went on to look up some more words that my daughter couldn’t understand and found all of them so nicely explained.”
